An integral part of the Benrido Atelier’s mission is to support the continuation of the collotype tradition by working with contemporary photographers. The Hariban Award is an annual photography competition that encourages entering artists to reimagine their work through the collotype process.
The 2016 competition was won by Brazilian born Claudio Silvano who was able to spend two weeks working in Kyoto at the Atelier. Three special prize winners, Michael Vahrenwald, Mayumi Suzuki and Claudio Nolasco, and Master Printers Choice Award Teri Havens were joined by ten photographers (Lea Habourdin, Maria Inglessis, Miho Kajioka, Natalia Kopkina, Maria do Mar Rego, Marie Passa, and Joanna Piotrowska) receiving honorable mentions. All of these artists have their work included in this limited edition, hand printed collotype portfolio.
The jury was comprised of Marc Feustel (Independent Curator, Writer and Editor/Founder of eyecurious.com), Mariko Takeuchi (Independent Curator/Associate Professor at Kyoto University of Art and Design), Peter Barberie (Brodsky Curator of Photographs, Alfred Stieglitz Center, at the Philadelphia Museum of Art) and Tsuyoshi Ito (Program Director, Project Basho/ONWARD).
The culmination of meticulous development and production, the portfolio offers a stunning visual and tactile experience that combines traditional technique with contemporary projects. The 58 page catalogue comes in a limited edition of 80, hand printed on Japanese Gampi & Mitsumata washi paper. The master printers at Benrido worked closely with the Hariban Award winners to realize a cohesive and affecting portfolio sure to be an integral part of any owners collection.
